Wrong Way Safety Project

The Wrong-Way Safety project is part of GMX's effort to continue to improve motorists' safety by reducing the number of wrong-way incidents. The project began in June 2022 and is expected to be completed by Fall 2023. It involves the installation of a wrong-way detection system, associated pavement markings and signs at twenty-six (26) ramp locations on SR-112, SR-836, SR-874, SR-878, and SR-924; adding to the eight (8) already installed wrong-way detection systems. With this project, a vehicle entering any of the twenty-six (26) ramp locations in the wrong direction will be detected by the system, which would automatically activate flashing wrong-way signs to alert the wrong-way driver. Simultaneously, the system would send a notification to the GMX operators at the Traffic Management Center who could alert other drivers and law enforcement. The signs and pavement marking enhancements included as part of this project would also help alert wrong-way drivers before getting further into the expressways.
