US-1 Express
This project, in coordination with Miami-Dade Transit, will evaluate the use of Manage Lanes along the South Miami-Dade Busway as an opportunity to improve mobility, enhance mass transit and relieve congestion along the corridor. The proposed US-1 Express project encompasses the corridor extending from Kendall Drive on the north, to Florida City on the south, for a distance of approximately 20 miles.
The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has approved incorporating the US-1 Express Planning Development and Environmental Study (PD&E) into the 2035 MPO Long Range Plan. In mid 2010 MDX will commence the PD&E, which will include the detailed evaluation of engineering and environmental impacts, alternatives analysis, identification of benefits and potential mitigation of impacts, and a comprehensive public involvement program throughout the process.
The objective is to perform a roadway PD&E for the implementation of managed lanes within the right of way of the existing South Miami-Dade Busway to include tolled, congestion priced lanes, similar to those along I-95, to alleviate congestion on US-1 while enhancing bus transit service and possibly generating revenue to expedite other transportation improvements within the corridor. The study will highlight and document the benefits of the proposed managed lanes to the bus transit service along the Busway. It will also document the impact and potential benefits to overall safety at cross intersections as well as the improvements to traffic conditions on existing roadways connecting to US-1.
The US-1 Express project proposes the use of excess capacity along the South Miami-Dade Busway to develop this innovative transportation alternative to improve mobility, connectivity, and transit service, using intelligent transportation technology, while preserving an envelope for future premium transit expansion.
Preliminary results from the September 2008, Miami-Dade MPO South Miami-Dade Managed Lanes Study, indicate that transit overall performance, including travel times for regular and express bus service could be improved if the US-1 Express project is implemented. The proposed project would also enhance safety for both transit and general traffic by minimizing potential conflicts at the intersections throughout the corridor. Currently, US-1 experiences significant levels of congestion and has an annual average daily traffic (AADT) approximately 70,000 to 110,000 vehicles along the northern segment of the corridor.
